Privacy Isn't Free — But It Should Be Cheap
Most 'free' AI apps make money from your data. ZDR Chat flips the model — you pay for tokens directly, nothing else.
The most expensive AI apps aren’t the ones that charge you. They’re the ones that are free — because you pay with your data.
The “Free” Trap
Every AI chat app needs to cover costs. GPUs aren’t free. Bandwidth isn’t free. Engineering salaries aren’t free. So how do “free” apps make money?
- Your conversations are used for training — improving their models at your expense
- Your usage data is analyzed and sold — behavioral insights are valuable
- You’re locked into a subscription — month after month, even if you barely use it
- Your attention is monetized — ads, upsells, premium tiers
None of this is spelled out. The price is hidden in the fine print.
A Different Model
ZDR Chat takes a different approach. The app itself is free — it’s a static site that costs us basically nothing to host on Cloudflare’s free tier. We aren’t in the business of monetizing your data or your attention.
When you use ZDR Chat, the only cost is what you choose to spend on tokens through OpenRouter. That’s it.
| Traditional AI App | ZDR Chat |
|---|---|
| Pays for servers by selling data | Pays nothing for hosting (static site) |
| Locks you into a subscription | No subscription — pay OpenRouter directly |
| Controls which models you can use | Any of 300+ models on OpenRouter |
| Opaque pricing | Per-token costs shown in real-time |
| Your data trains their models | Your data never leaves your browser |
What Privacy Actually Costs
Let’s be honest: running AI models costs real money. A single request to Claude Opus might cost $0.01–$0.05 depending on how much you send and receive. That adds up if you’re processing entire codebases or analyzing 100-page documents.
But for everyday use — asking questions, brainstorming, drafting emails, summarizing articles — costs are negligible. Most messages cost less than a penny.
It Helps That We Have No Skin in the Game
We should be completely transparent: we’re not affiliated with OpenRouter. We don’t resell their tokens, earn commissions, or take a cut. The app is an independent, open-source frontend that happens to use OpenRouter’s API.
We built ZDR Chat because private AI should be accessible — not because there’s money in it. The app costs us next to nothing to host, and we have no plans to monetize it.
If you want to support the project, use it, share it, and contribute on GitHub. That’s all we ask.
Track Every Cent
The app shows you exactly what each session costs in the status bar — tokens in, tokens out, total cost, and your remaining credit balance. No surprises, no mystery fees.
Here’s what $1 of OpenRouter credit gets you in practice:
| Model | ~Messages per $1 |
|---|---|
| GPT-4o Mini | ~1,000 short messages |
| Claude Sonnet 4 | ~150 medium messages |
| Claude Opus 4 | ~20 long messages |
| DeepSeek V3 (free) | ∞ (until rate limits kick in) |
No monthly bill. No surprise charges. Just honest, transparent per-token pricing.
The Bottom Line
Privacy isn’t free — GPUs require power, models require compute, and infrastructure requires maintenance. But that cost should be transparent, not hidden behind a “free” label that actually costs you your data.
ZDR Chat makes that transparency the foundation of the experience. You see what you’re spending, you control which models you use, and nothing about you is monetized.
That’s the kind of cheap we can stand behind.
